The Rio Dulce is a highly desirable cruising destination with convenient accommodations for boaters, numerous marinas, complete marine services, haulout facilities, unmatched scenery, safe harbors and every other service a boater needs. The Rio Dulce is considered by boaters to be the best "hurricane hole" in the Caribbean.

The town of Livingston is at the entrance to the Rio Dulce and here is where you must take care of vessel check in and check out.

THE BAR

The mouth of the Rio Dulce has a sand bar which must be crossed before reaching the deep water of the river. Vessels drawing more than 5 feet must take care to enter where the bar is the lowest. Vessels drawing over 5 1/2 feet should cross the bar at high tide. The deepest it ever gets at the deepest point during the highest tide is 7 1/2 feet.

MARINE RADIO

Almost everyone on the Rio Dulce monitors the local hailing frequency, channel 68. Channel 68 should be used only for hailing, distress calls or general announcements to the fleet. As soon as you make contact, please move to a different channel such as 66, 67 or 69 immediately. The National Police monitor channel 16 so if you have an emergency or distress call use channel 68 to call other boaters or channel 16 to call directly to the police. Please note that the police speak only Spanish.

A directed net is held each morning at 7:30 AM on channel 69. The net usually takes about 15 minutes to complete. There are segments for priority traffic, mail call, services offered or needed, buy, sell or trade and commercial announcements. The net ends with a trivia quiz.

The Northwest Caribbean Net is held each day on 6209 +/-3kHz USB at  (8:00 AM local time). The Northwest Caribbean Net is a directed net. A weather report is given and check-ins are requested from boats in the waters of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. The net finishes with boat to boat contacts. Several boats anchored along the Rio Dulce usually check in to this net every day and this would be an opportunity for you to talk directly with boaters on the Rio Dulce.

Hidden Hazards

The waters of the Rio Dulce are largely clear and free of debris but there are occasional hazards in the form of floating or submerged logs and tree branches. In the smaller tributary rivers and in calmer spots away from the main stream of the river such hazards are more common. They are also more common after heavy rains that wash debris down from the hills. Always keep a sharp lookout.

At night, fishing nets are strung up at many points along the river. Nets are often placed on either side of the point at El Castillo. If you run afoul of one of these nets you will probably have to cut your propeller free with a knife.

It is very enjoyable to explore the numerous tributary rivers of the Rio Dulce. Many of them can be followed upstream for miles. The smaller rivers often contain submerged logs and branches but rocks are also a hazard. When traveling the smaller rivers, the water can suddenly become shallow with rocks just below the surface and then immediately deepen again. Fortunately, the water in these rivers is usually clear and these hazards can be spotted by a person stationed at the bow. The best boat to take on these trips is a cayuco (dugout canoe) because they are tough and won't puncture. In a cayuco you can just drive right over most obstacles, raising and lowering the engine at the right moments.

Boating at Night

You need to be especially careful when boating at night. Most of the small boats on the Rio Dulce are wooden canoes (cayucos) operated by local residents for their personal use, fishing, hauling materials or just getting around. Cayucos range from very small up to huge 50 footers loaded with tons of cement or bricks. Very few boats have running lights or lighting of any kind and the noise of your own engine makes it impossible to hear other boats. The possibility of a collision is high. For this reason you should always carry a flashlight or portable spotlight at night and use it to sweep the horizon. Not only will you see obstructions but other boaters will see you.

Boats at anchor should always use an anchor light. The best location for a light is at deck level. It is difficult for someone in a small boat to judge the distance to the anchor light at the masthead. A white light(s) at deck level is much more effective on the Rio Dulce. Best is to use both. A handy solution to this is the normal masthead light plus a kerosene hurricane lamp or a modern fluorescent lamp at deck level.

The incidence of accidents is higher on weekends because there are more boaters are some are intoxicated. The problem is at its worst on major holidays when hundreds of wealthy Guatemalans head for the Rio Dulce and the river fills with jet-skis and powerboats.

Emergencies and Rescue

The Guatemalan Navy regularly patrols the river immediately north and south of the Rio Dulce bridge.  This operation is funded by local businesses through Eco-Rio.  The Rio Dulce Volunteer Fire Department provides paramedic and emergency medical transport.  There is no organized search and rescue on the Rio Dulce. If you have a boating emergency during the day and put out a distress call on the local hailing frequency (channel 68), many boats will be racing to your aid in a matter of seconds. However, there is no government sponsored search and rescue and channel 68 is not monitored during the night. 

Safety Equipment

Out on El Golfete and Lake Izabal the weather can change very suddenly and calm waters rapidly become very rough. In addition to the usual life-jackets it is a good idea to always carry drinking water, extra flashlights, plastic bags or sheets to ward off rain and a spare compass. Large plastic trash bags make fine raincoats with holes cut for your head and arms.

SERVICES

Fuel

There are three fuel docks in Rio Dulce.  All three are on the El Relleno (south side of the river near the bridge). The three are Puma, Esso, and Shell.  All three offer unleaded gas, pre-mix, and diesel. The town of Livingston has a Texaco fuel dock.  Fuel is available in Fronteras but you will have to carry gas cans back and forth from the dock and it's a long way. In Mariscos, on the south shore of the lake, one must use gas cans as well but there are young boys with pushcarts who, for a tip, will fetch the fuel for you.  It's several hundred yards from the pier to the gas station. Five Quetzals per can is a typical tip.

Provisions

There are plenty of tiendas (stores) in Fronteras where you can buy all the basics for low prices. In the center of Fronteras are several typical Guatemalan open-air markets where its possible to buy everything from fresh vegetables, fruit, and meat to soap, pots, pans, shoes, rope and kerosene. The many sellers compete with each other which keeps prices low. Prices are always negotiable. There is also a supermarket called La Dispensa, which is a large chain found throughout Guatemala and owned by Wal-Mart.

There are two businesses carrying provisions that have docks and are located directly on the shore.  They are RAM Marina and Tienda Reed (Chiqui's).  There, one can order professionally packed meats and food from the same companies that provision the ships that sail from the nearby major ports of Puerto Barrios and Santo Tomas.  See the Business Index.

Marinas

There are numerous marinas in picturesque settings along the Rio Dulce. Most offer side-ties, 120/240 volt electricity and potable water hookups. Most also offer hot showers, cabanas, and a restaurant. Some offer a laundry service. For more information see the Marina Directory.

Repairs

Rio Dulce has two marine supply stores which stock and sell items from the West Marine catalog and others. One shop performs sail design and repair.  Available also are repair and rebuilding of diesel and outboard engines, marine gear repair, wood and fiberglass construction and repair, etc. There are two boat haulout facilities. Welding (steel, iron, stainless and aluminum) and carpentry workers are available plus a plentiful pool of skilled local labor.  See the Business Index and Marina Directory.

LA BARRA

En la desembocadura del Río Dulce hay una barra de arena que debe cruzarse antes de alcanzar las aguas profundas del río. Las embarcaciones de más de 5 pies de calado deben tener el cuidado de entrar por donde la barra es más profunda. Las embarcaciones de más de 5 1/2 pies deberán cruzar la barra con la marea alta. El calado máximo alcanzado es de 7 1/2 pies siempre con la marea alta.

RADIO MARINA

Casi todo el mundo en Río Dulce controla la frecuencia de llamada local, el canal 68. El canal 68 debe usarse únicamente para llamar, contestar llamadas o anuncios en general. Tan pronto como usted hace contacto con su interlocutor, por favor cambie inmediatamente a un canal diferente, como el 66, 67 ó 69. Casi nadie controla el canal 16, de forma que si usted tiene una llamada de emergencia o está en un apuro llame usado el canal 68.

Una red dirigida tiene lugar cada mañana a las 7:30 en el canal 69. La red dura aproximadamente 15 minutos. Hay segmentos para el tráfico de prioridad, llamadas, anuncios comerciales, artículos para venta y compra. El final de la red termina con un pequeño 'Trivial'.

La Northwest Caribbean Net tiene lugar cada día en 8188 kHz USB a 1600-0200z (10:00 AM hora local). La Northwest Caribbean Net es una red dirigida. Hay un informe de las condiciones metereológicas, y se pide a los barcos en las aguas de Belice, Guatemala, Honduras y México que se registren. La red termina con llamadas barco a barco. SEGURIDAD EN LA NAVEGACIÓN EN RÍO DULCE

Objetos Ocultos

Las aguas del Río Dulce son claras en su mayor parte y están libres de obstáculos, aunque hay peligros ocasionales en forma de árboles flotando o ramas sumergidas. En los ríos menores y en los lugares más calmos lejos del cauce fluvial principal tales peligros son más comunes. Son también bastante común después de las grandes lluvias, ya que estas arrastran troncos y otros objetos desde las colinas. Es conveniente fijar un puesto de observación. De noche, las redes de pesca se amarran en muchos puntos a lo largo del río. Las redes se ponen, frecuentemente, a ambos lados de la punta del Castillo. Si usted de enreda con una de estas redes probablemente tendrá que cortarla con un cuchillo para liberar su hélice.

Es muy agradable e interesante explorar los ríos pequeños que desembocan en el Río Dulce. Muchos de ellos pueden subirse corriente arriba durante varias millas. Los ríos pequeños frecuentemente contienen objetos sumergidos, ramas y rocas que pueden ser un peligro. Cuando viaje por los ríos menores, tenga en cuenta que el fondo se puede elevar rápidamente en un bajío con rocas e inmediatamente ahondarse otra vez. Afortunadamente, el agua en estos ríos es clara y transparente y estos peligros pueden ser localizados por una persona situada en la proa. El mejor barco para realizar estos viajes es un cayuco (canoa) porque son de poco calado, duros y no se estropearan con los golpes. En un cayuco puede pasar sobre la mayoría de los obstáculos, elevando y bajando el motor cuando sea necesario.

Navegando de noche

Necesita ser especialmente cuidadoso al navegar de noche. La mayoría de los pequeños barcos son cayucos, manejados por los locales para su uso personal, pesca, jalar materiales o desplazarse. El tamaño de los cayucos va desde los muy pequeños hasta los de 50 pies de eslora cargados con toneladas de cemento u otros materiales. Muy pocos barcos tienen luces de navegación o de cualquier tipo, y el ruido de su propio motor hará imposible el escucharlos. La posibilidad de abordaje es alta. Por esta razón debe siempre llevar una linterna o luz portátil y usarla para comprobar el horizonte, no solo para ver los obstáculos sino también para que los otros barcos le vean a usted.

Los barcos anclados deben usar siempre una luz de posición. La mejor posición para esta luz es a nivel de la cubierta, ya que es difícil para alguien en un pequeño bote calcular la distancia a una luz situada en lo alto del palo de proa. Una luz blanca en la cubierta es mucho más eficaz en Río Dulce, aunque lo ideal es usar ambas. Una solución sencilla para este fín es usar la luz de posición normal y una lámpara de queroseno en la cubierta.

La incidencia de accidentes es mas alta los fines de semana porque hay mas barcos y algunos de los tripulantes están bebidos. El problema es aun mayor en los periodos de vacaciones, cuando cientos de guatemaltecos, con dinero, invaden Río Dulce con sus motos de agua y lanchas rápidas.

Emergencias y Rescate

La fuerza naval de Guatemala patrulla el río inmediatamente al norte y al sur del puente de Río Dulce. Esta operación es financiada por las empresas locales a través de Eco-Rio. Los Bomberos Voluntarios de Río Dulce provee de paramédicos y de transporte médico de emergencia. No hay búsqueda y rescate organizada en el Río Dulce. Si usted tiene una emergencia de navegación durante el día, ponga una llamada de socorro en la frecuencia de comunicación por radio locales (canal 68), y muchos barcos se correrá en su ayuda en cuestión de segundos. Sin embargo, no hay búsqueda y rescate patrocinado por el gobierno y el canal 68 no se controla durante la noche.

Equipo de Seguridad

En El Golfete y el Lago Izabal las condiciones metereológicas pueden cambiar muy bruscamente y las tranquilas aguas se pueden llegar a endurecer muy rápidamente. Además de los equipos usuales de seguridad, como los salvavidas, es una buena idea llevar siempre agua potable, una linterna eléctrica extra, bolsas o plásticos para cubrirse y una brújula de repuesto. Las bolsas de basura grandes se pueden convertir en impermeables haciendoles unas aberturas para la cabeza y brazos.

SERVICIOS

Combustible

Hay tres muelles de combustible en Río Dulce. Todos están en el El Relleno, en el lado sur del río cerca del puente. Son estaciones de Puma, Esso, y Shell y las tres disponen de gasolina sin plomo, pre-mezclada, y diesel. El pueblo de Livingston tiene un estación de Texaco con muelle de combustible. En El Estor, en el Lago Izabal, hay una estación en el interior del pueblo por lo que tendrá que llevar el combustible en bidones desde la estación hasta el muelle. La situación en Mariscos, en la costa Sur, es los misma pero hay muchachos jóvenes con carretillas quienes, por una propina, le llevarán el combustible desde la estación de servicio al muelle. Cinco Quetzales por bidón es una propina adecuada.

Aprovisionamiento

Hay abundancia de tiendas (almacenes) en Fronteras donde usted puede comprar todos los productos básicos a bajos precios. En el centro de Fronteras hay un típico mercado Guatemalteco, al aire libre, donde es posible comprar de todo, desde vegetales, fruta y carne fresca a jabón, envases, cacerolas, calzado, cuerdas y queroseno. Los vendedores compiten los unos con los otros, lo que mantiene los precios bajos. Los precios siempre son negociables. 

Hay dos lugares dedicados al aprovisionamiento profesional de barcos, donde se pueden comprar cantidades grandes de carne, profesionalmente empaquetada, y otros tipos de alimentos. Estos establecimientos representan a las mismas compañías que aprovisionan el constante flujo de buques de carga de Puerto Barrios y Santo Tomas de Castilla.

Marinas

Hay varias marinas en bonitos lugares a lo largo del Río Dulce. Algunas disponen de muelles, electricidad de 120/240 voltios y tomas de agua purificada. La mayoría también ofrecen duchas calientes, cabañas y un restaurante. Algunas disponen de servicio de lavandería. Dos de las marinas son bastantes grandes con 75 atraques o más. Hay también numerosas marinas pequeñas asociadas con algunos de los hoteles y abundancia de anclajes protegidos. Para más información ver el Guia de Marinas.

Reparaciones

Río Dulce tiene dos almacenes marinos de abastecimiento que venden artículos de West Marine y otros. Un taller repara y diseña velas en un gran almacén apropiado. Hay disponible también reparación y reconstrucción de motores diesel y fuera borda, reparación de engranajes marinos, trabajos en madera, reparación y construcción en fibra de vidrio, etc. Se dispone de servicio de dos negocios con grúa con capacidad de mas que 60 toneladas. Hay soldadura (acero, hierro, inoxidable y aluminio) y un grupo de carpinteros cualificados.
