Totonicapan, Guatemala
Totonicapán Department is located in the northwest region of Guatemala, up in the highlands. Before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, Totonicapan was the second largest province of the dominion of the Quiché and was ruled from Q'umarkaj. The name Totonicapán derives from Nahuatl and means place of hot water.
Totonicapán Department is situated across the Sierra Madres and so is primarily high and mountainous. The climate is cool to cold, by Guatemalan standards. There is not a lot of flat farmland in the Department of Totonicapán so contour and terracing methods were developed that permit agriculture. Totonicapán is known for high quality hand woven woolens, such as Momostenango ponchos.
Much of the population of Totonicapán is deeply religious with the Mayan religion particularly strong. Mayan priests are still considered the leaders of the community. The Mayan 260 day calendar is observed and sacred rituals are performed by the priests.
Totonicapán has various natural attractions including thermal baths and the cliffs of Momostenango.
