Sacatepequez, Guatemala
The Department of Sacatepequez is located centrally, near Guatemala City, and it contains the old capitol city of Central America, Antigua Guatemala.
Sacatepequez is located in the Central Plateau Mountain Complex. The topography is mountainous and volcanic but there are also hilly areas and flat fertile plains well suited for agriculture. The main economic activities in Sacatepequez Department are tourism, agriculture, and crafts (artesania). Artesania of all types is found in this region, including weaving, woodworking, ceramics, basketmaking, gold and silversmithing, and gemcutting including jade, and furniture making. There are also artisans who make guitars and violins.
The old capitol city, Antigua Guatemala, is possibly the most important tourism center in the country. It was founded by the Spaniards in the 16th century and served as the capitol of Central America for over two centuries.
