Tikal, El Peten, Guatemala
Tikal is a stunning archeological site, one of the largest in the world. It's a huge city that covers 48 square miles (125 km2). It was inhabited continuously for 1,300 years. The central portion comprising the largest temples and pyramids has been excavated and is open to the public. The excavation and study has been underway for 40 years but still only a small fraction of the city has been uncovered. Tikal was the first site in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One can spend days and walk many kilometers exploring the central part of the city. The experience cannot be captured in words or photographs, it has to be seen in person.
