Flores, El Peten, Guatemala

Flores is the capital city of El Petén, the largest department of Guatemala. It is located in the northeastern part of the country near the famous archeological ruins at Tikal. The City of Flores has a population of around 14,000. The municipality of Flores surrounds the city and has a population of about 25,000. Flores is built around a picturesque lake called Lake Peten Itza and on an island in the lake. It has been occupied by Mayans since ancient times.

For most people, Flores is their base while visiting the ruins at Tikal. There are numerous buses to take you back and forth to Tikal each day. Flores also has Guatemala's only international airport outside of Guatemala City.
