El Peten, Guatemala
El Peten is by far the largest of the 22 departments of Guatemala and also the northernmost. In ancient times, El Peten was the heart of the Mayan Civilization. The world famous Mayan city Tikal is found in El Peten along with dozens of other archaeological sites, and countless additional sites, many of which are still undocumented. And even larger city called El Mirador is also found in Peten but has not yet been excavated. The Mayans of El Peten were the last to fall to the Spanish conquerors. It took the Spanish until 1697 to finally conquer it.
Until recently, El Peten was a backwater with very low population density and not much economic activity besides farming, ranching, and tropical hardwood harvesting. Today El Peten is the fastest growing department in Guatemala. The population is growing, towns are springing up everywhere, and construction is booming.
