Morales, Izabal, Guatemala
Morales is a municipality located in the southern part of the Department of Izabal on the Motagua River. Morales includes 9 barrios and 56 other communities with a total population of about 100,000 persons. The town of Morales is named after Prospero Morales, a Honduran military man who had an encampment here called Camp Morales. After a while it was referred to as simply Morales.
For most of the 20th century, Morales was the headquarters of the United Fruit Company's banana empire. Today, Morales is much more than the company town it used to be. The business of bananas continues but Morales is now a major commercial center that supports industry and cattle ranching, and is home to numerous schools and colleges.
