Livingston is located at the mouth of the Rio Dulce. It is a popular tourist attraction because the unique culture of the people. Livingston was founded 200 years ago by Garifuna people (Black Caribs). The Garifuna culture has unique traditions, music, art, religion, and language.
For more than 60 years, before Puerto Barrios existed as a seaport, Livingston was the eastern seaport of Guatemala. The town has a long history.
The main industries in Livingston today are fishing, and shrimping, and tourism. Livingston offers numerous hotels and restaurants serving unique local dishes such as tapado and pan de coco.
