El Quiche, Guatemala
The Department of El Quiche is named after the Quiche (K'iche') people, although about a half-dozen Mayan languages can be heard here. El Quiche has always had a high population, mostly of Mayan descent. It was of major importance in the Post-Classic period.
The terrain of El Quiche varies from mountainous to the northern 1/5th consisting of tropical lowlands. Agriculture is the main activity with crops including grains, potatoes, coffee, rice, tobacco, and more.
Well known to tourists is the town of Chichicastenango with it's spectacular market and famous church. No tourist guide is complete without photos of Chichi. Archeaological sites are found at Q'umarkaj, Pascual Abaj, Cerro de San Andrés, Los Cerritos and La Laguna.
