El Progreso, Guatemala
El Progreso is located in the central part of the country, about 50 miles east of Guatemala City. This area was known to the Mayans as Guastatoya or Huastatoya, which derives from the Nahuatl words guaxhtl atoyac". These words can be interpreted to mean both "the last of the mountains" and "where the cold ends and the heat begins."
The terrain of El Progreso is varied but the climate is basically warm and arid. During colonial times, the main route from Guatemala to the Caribbean and thence to Spain passed through the area that is now El Progreso. For this reason the Spanish influence here was strong and much or the original Mayan culture is heavily diluted or gone. Even so, El Progreso is known for having strong traditions, especially when it comes to mythology and storytelling. There are a vast array of such stories and legends found in this area that is quite unique.
