Baja Verapaz, Guatemala
This region was part of the Mayan heartland in ancient times. When the Spanish invaded and conquered the Mayans, they were repeatedly repulsed by fierce Mayan warriors in this region. The Catholic Church suggested a peaceful approach might be more effective than force. The approach succeeded, hence the name Verapaz (true peace) for Baja (lower) and Alta (upper) Verapaz commemorates the peaceful way this area was subdued by the Spanish invaders.
The Department of Baja Verapaz is located south of Alta Verapaz and west of the Department of Izabal. Salamá is the capital. Baja Verapaz is home to the fantastic Mario Dary Biosphere Preserve, where native flora and fauna of the region, including cloud forest and the endangered quetzal, national bird of Guatemala can be observed.
